BLOG Transform Your Outdoor Space: The Benefits of Fence Soft and Power Washing Aug 27, 2024

Fences are important to many people here in Sarasota, Manatee, and Port Charlotte counties. They mark our land boundaries and help keep our pets safe. Fences come in many shapes and sizes, and a high-quality exterior cleaning company has the right chemicals and methods to treat every kind of fence.

PVC fences are the most common fence material here in Southwest Florida. Known for their durability, ease of installation, and long lifespan, PVC fences are often used to demarcate yard dimensions. These fences are free-standing objects where organic growth takes a significant amount of time to build up. Constant humidity and condensation create the conditions for mold and algae to become visible over time.

The nooks and crannies of a PVC fence—or any fence, for that matter—can also promote the growth of lichens and certain kinds of moss. These need to be treated with appropriate chemicals and physically removed with a brush by hand. When properly soft-washed by a trained professional using the right chemicals and equipment, PVC fences almost always return to their original color, and the surface becomes very clean. This "resets" the organic growth on the surface to nearly 0%, allowing you to enjoy a brand-new-looking fence for a long time before it needs to be treated again.

Wood fences, including those made from pine, oak, Brazilian ipe, teakwood, and other common woods, can also be soft-washed with chemicals. However, soft washing different types of wood fences involves additional steps after the application and brush agitation of chemicals, which makes it different from cleaning PVC fencing. Factors to consider when treating a wood fence include the time between treatments, the number of times the fence has been power-washed, the type of growth present, whether the fence has been previously stained, and the type of finish (such as varnish or wood oil) on the fence at the time of treatment.

Soft washing removes organic growth (such as mold, algae, bacteria, lichens, moss, and mildew) from the wood lignans or wood fibers, helping prepare the wood surface for the next step. After soft washing, wood fences are often re-stained, repainted, or refinished in some way.

Soft washing can sometimes "whiten" wood fencing and change its appearance, especially if a wood fence has gone a long time without treatment or cleaning. These are all factors to consider when exploring options for how your wood fence will look after treatment and what steps, if any, you would like to take post-treatment to ensure your fence retains its appearance, durability, and safety for many years to come.
